Why Tires Matter More Than You Think

Tires aren’t just rubber rings that keep your car rolling. They play a critical role in your car’s safety, handling, fuel efficiency, and braking performance. Here’s a simple test: grab a penny and insert it into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is worn down to 2/32 of an inch or less—and that means it’s time for tire replacement.

If you prefer a more precise measurement, a tread depth gauge can tell you exactly how much rubber you have left. Many experts recommend replacing your tires when tread depth falls below 4/32” for optimal safety.

2. Look for Uneven Tire Wear and Tear

Your tires should wear evenly across the surface. If you notice bald spots, excessive wear on one side, or a pattern that looks like scalloping or cupping, it could be a sign of suspension problems, misalignment, or improper tire pressure. Uneven wear not only shortens tire life but also affects how your vehicle handles.

Rubber dries out and loses flexibility over time, increasing the risk of cracks, separation, and blowouts. Check the DOT code on your tire’s sidewall—those last four digits tell you the week and year the tire was manufactured.
